MODULE 1 INTRODUCTORY UNIT – THE WAY WE LEARN
How I learn
In this introductory unit students investigate their individual learning style and personality traits and apply it to a series of lateral thinking exercises. The aim of this unit it establish the foundation for the course in a ‘self-awareness’ and ‘self-directed’ focus.
MODULE 2 INDIVIDUALS OF INFLUENCE
People and Power- Our place in the world
Students research a wide range of contemporary individuals of influence and current affairs issues as a means of understanding their place and their concerns in the contemporary world. MODULE 3 TIME STUDY 1- Ancient World
Socrates, Aristotle and Plato- Ethics, Power and Politics
Building on the Ancient World students explore the major philosophies of Socrates, Aristotle and Plato as a means of investigating issues of education, ethics, citizenship and the disciplines. Devised as a forum style unit, drawing on a series of ‘experts’ from all the disciplines: music, art, literature, maths and science, students learn about the influence of the Ancient World on contemporary thought
MODULE 4 RESEARCH PROJECT- Futures study
Projecting forward
The aim of this unit of work is to give students an opportunity to explore how issues of the present can be projected into future events. Students learn about forecasting strategies and scenario writing. Student research a wide range of issues and devise an individual and group project based on a topic of concern and/or interest.
MODULE 5 STUDY OF THE NEAR EAST
Philosophies of the Near East
In this unit of work students undertake a ‘micro-study’ of the Near East gaining an overview of the historical, political and spiritual events and practices which have shaped and influenced the Western world. Students will look at the major religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Students will develop skills, knowledge and understanding in order to express themselves and their relationships with others and the world.
