Welcome to our site. We hope this provides you with some insights into the different subjects that are offered through the Humanities Faculty.
Before settling into the more specific information about each subject, lets look at some general tips for success that students find allow them to achieve to their potential.
1. A little bit often. Students often fall into the trap of leaving work to the last minute. This then creates a panic and work presented is not always the best they can do. Teachers often comment about silly errors in work which indicates that the material presented is not the polished effort most students wish to provide.
2. Talk to your teacher. If there is something you are uncertain about then talk to the teacher about it. Teachers are there to assist students. That is their job. If you are unsure about a task requirement, clarify it. It allows you to provide what is required, and saves a lot of wasted time. Should the same thing be an issue for many of the group then perhaps the teacher needs to revisit the aspect of a task and explain it again. It is quite possible that the learner is not lacking in understanding, just that a particular point was not clearly explained
3. Read, Read, Read. The most successful student take time to read over their class notes, read daily newspapers and also read for pleasure. Reading develops vocabulary (Range of words to use) demonstrates good writing style and allows student to develop an analytical mindset. Following daily news broadcasts is also a great way to learn about what is happening in the world around us. This general knowledge provides an excellent basis for the more specific points of the topics being covered in any course being undertaken.
4. Participate effectively in classwork. Classwork can be boring. It can also be fun. Lessons don't need to be always a battle between teacher and student. If you make a serious effort, then the lesson material can often be interesting. Teachers like classes who actually try. They are more likely to put greater effort into making lessons interesting if students are prepared to engage positively in them. Just think about how much you like your favourite music, sport, hobby and soon. You actually engage with it, and as a result find it enjoyable. Doing the same in class is a good start in getting things off to a positive start.
5. Come to school every day, and come prepared. Nothing makes it harder to learn than not having all the necessary items for learning. Just as it is difficult to prepare an exciting or interesting meal without all the ingredients it is difficult to learn without all the needed equipment. Being in class every lesson possible also helps. You fail to understand a song, a request from parents or otherwise if you only hear half of it. Learning is the same. You need to be here every day to get all the necessary material for leading if you hope to succeed.
6. Talk to your parents. Yes, talk to them. Experience shows that parents who take an interest in their child's work, and encourage their child to talk about what they are doing, actually find academic performance is enhanced. It is also a good way of children teaching their parents about issues and aspects they come across.
7. Don't give up. When you were little and learning to walk, you had many failures. This made you more determined to master the art of walking. Like this, learning has many times when your achievements are below what you would like or expect. Use these times to make you more determined to be successful. You also need to remember that not everyone can be the best in the course - there is only ever one winner! You can be a "winner" if you always attempt work to the best of your ability and persevere at all times. Doing your best is good enough, and parents/carers, we need to be aware of the limitations of our children and not pressure them to be something they are not. Accepting individuals as achieving to their potential is often harder for us. But, encouraging and supporting them can often have other benefits - happier children who work harder and improve their achievement levels.
8. Keep everyone informed. Use your diary, the family planner, post its on the wall etc to let parents and others know what you are doing. Also talk to teachers if there are issues, holidays or other matters which will impact on your learning. If we know, then most things can be solved. Problems that cannot be solved are those which are hidden!
